Using PerplexityAI as a Writing Partner

Part one: explaining the prompt from Ethical ELA

The writing website, Ethical ELA, is doing the last of a set of writing prompts for February.  This one was called “fill in the blanks”.

Here is the very accommodating prompt:

Today, I invite you to fill in the blanks in these lines by Whitman, or create and refill blanks of a stanza by another poet of your choice (this could be a time when you fill in the blanks expressively or reflectively in zine form):

I celebrate ,
And what I you ,
For every ___________
 me as good
_______ you.

Original lines by Walt Whitman’s “Song of Myself”

I celebrate myself, and sing myself,
And what I assume you shall assume,
For every atom belonging to me as good belongs to you.

Part two: responses to prompt:

Fran Haley response:

Grandmothering

I celebrate the immutable now.

And what I pour of myself, you drink – a transubstantiation of sorts, blood-memory in the making.

For every day, in passing, decreases me as good
as it increases you.

My response:

Come fill thy blank self
with song
& assume we all shiver,
every atom of mine
with yours
in celebration.

Part three: showing AI explication to Whitman’s opening to “Song of Myself” and two other responses

Perplexity response to Whitman:

These lines convey a profound sense of interconnectedness and empathy. The speaker celebrates their own existence and attributes, suggesting that what they assume or perceive about themselves, they also extend to others. The idea that every particle that comprises the self is inherently good and shared with others implies a deep unity and commonality among all individuals. It’s a powerful expression of the belief in the inherent goodness and interconnected nature of humanity, where self-celebration is intertwined with the celebration of others.

Perplexity response to Fran Haley’s fill in the blank:

“Grandmothering” is a poem that delves into the profound connection between generations, particularly the relationship between a grandmother and her grandchild. The poem celebrates the present moment, emphasizing its unchanging nature, hence the phrase “the immutable now.” The act of sharing and passing on experiences, wisdom, and love is likened to a sacred transformation, described as a “transubstantiation of sorts,” evoking the religious concept of the Eucharist, where bread and wine are transformed into the body and blood of Christ.

The line “And what I pour of myself, you drink” vividly captures the idea of the grandmother imparting her essence to her grandchild, who receives it eagerly and completely. This exchange is described as a “blood-memory in the making,” suggesting that the bond between them is not only emotional and intellectual but also deeply rooted in their shared heritage and lineage.

The final two lines, “For every day, in passing, decreases me as good as it increases you,” encapsulate the bittersweet reality of this intergenerational relationship. As the grandmother imparts her knowledge and love to her grandchild, she recognizes that her own time and energy are finite. Each day that passes diminishes her own vitality and presence, yet simultaneously enriches and empowers the younger generation.

In essence, “Grandmothering” beautifully captures the timeless cycle of giving and receiving between generations, acknowledging both the sacrifices and the joys inherent in this process. It speaks to the enduring significance of familial connections and the profound impact of legacy and heritage on our lives.

Perplexity response to my poem:

This poem seems to convey a sense of unity and interconnectedness. The speaker urges the reader to “fill thy blank self with song,” suggesting a call to embrace creativity and expression. The line “& assume we all shiver” could be interpreted as a metaphor for experiencing a shared emotional or physical response, perhaps indicating empathy or solidarity. The following lines, “every atom of mine with yours in celebration,” further emphasize the idea of unity. The mention of atoms suggests a deep, fundamental connection, as if the speaker and the reader are intricately linked at the most basic level. The phrase “in celebration” implies that this connection is a cause for joy and festivity.

Overall, the poem appears to celebrate the idea of coming together, sharing emotions, and finding common ground through creativity and interconnectedness. It invites the reader to embrace their own voice and presence, while also recognizing the profound connection that exists between individuals.

Part Four: significance of this analysis?

I created a prompt to get my writing partner’s take on using generativeAI as an aid to writing:  explain the significance of this text as it relates to using generative AI as a writing partner.

Here is Perplexity AI’s response:

The analysis of the Ethical ELA writing prompt responses and the subsequent discussion on the use of generative AI in poetry writing highlights several key points about the evolving relationship between artificial intelligence and creative writing, particularly poetry.

### Generative AI as a Writing Partner

Generative AI, such as the models discussed in the provided texts, can serve as a valuable tool in the creative writing process. The responses to the Ethical ELA prompt demonstrate how AI can offer interpretations and expansions on human-generated content, providing insights that can inspire writers or help them see their work from new perspectives. This aligns with the broader potential of AI in creative writing, where it can assist in brainstorming, outlining, and revising work by offering suggestions that the writer may not have considered.

### Challenges and Limitations

However, the use of generative AI in poetry also faces significant challenges and limitations. As noted in the sources, AI lacks the inner experience and emotional depth that are often central to poetry[2]. Poetry is a deeply human art form that conveys emotions, experiences, and perspectives in ways that are often tied to the poet’s personal history and emotional landscape. AI, by its nature, cannot replicate these aspects of human experience, which limits its ability to create poetry that resonates on a human level.

Moreover, developing generative AI for poetry is technically challenging due to the need for high-quality, diverse datasets and the subjective nature of poetry’s evaluation[4]. Poetry encompasses a wide range of styles, forms, and themes, making it difficult to create AI models that can understand and replicate the nuances of poetic language effectively.

### Ethical and Professional Considerations

The integration of AI into the creative process also raises ethical and professional considerations. There is concern about the potential for AI to diminish the perceived value of human poets and their craft[4]. Additionally, the use of AI in creating poetry could lead to issues of authorship and originality, as well as the risk of generating content that is offensive or misleading.

### Conclusion

The use of generative AI as a writing partner in poetry underscores the complex interplay between technology and creativity. While AI can offer valuable assistance in the writing process, its limitations and the ethical considerations it raises highlight the importance of maintaining a human-centric approach to poetry. The unique qualities of human experience and emotional depth that define poetry cannot be fully replicated by AI, emphasizing the irreplaceable value of human creativity in the arts.

Here is Claude 2’s response:

This text provides an insightful example of how generative AI can be used as a collaborative writing tool.

The original prompt from Ethical ELA encourages creative expression by having the writer fill in blanks in a short poem. This allows flexibility for the writer to inject their own perspective.

The responses to the prompt showcase how two writers built upon the same initial framework in unique ways. Fran Haley took a more somber tone, focusing on the bittersweet nature of passing wisdom between generations. The other response has a more upbeat, celebratory style.

My analysis of each response demonstrates how generative AI could aid a writer by providing feedback on the meaning, themes, and emotions conveyed by a piece of writing. The AI was able to pick up on the nuanced differences between the two responses and provide an interpretation of how word choice, imagery, and ideas create distinct tones and meanings.

As a writing companion, generative AI could be leveraged to help writers refine and expand upon their own creative expressions. The AI could point out resonant metaphors, make suggestions for more vivid language, identify places where intent or emotion could be conveyed more clearly. It could also aid with editing by flagging redundant passages or weak connections between ideas.

Overall, this text illustrates how generative AI has the potential to collaborate with human writers, providing feedback and inspiration to enhance creativity. With the proper design and intent, AI could become a supportive tool for empowering writers, not replacing them. This example provides a glimpse of that promising possibility.

I’ve long thought Perplexity has more potential than some of the other engines (I also know it is built a bit different — not as a conversational bot but as an “answer engine”).

These lines “Poetry is a deeply human art form that conveys emotions, experiences, and perspectives in ways that are often tied to the poet’s personal history and emotional landscape. AI, by its nature, cannot replicate these aspects of human experience, which limits its ability to create poetry that resonates on a human level.”

Yes. I hope so. I think so.
    Right?

I asked Perplexity to analyze the passage that I pulled out and shared (from your Perplexity).
      This is its response:

“While it’s true that AI, by its current nature, lacks personal emotions and experiences, it is capable of creating poetry that resonates on a human level. AI can analyze vast amounts of existing poetry to understand patterns, styles, and emotional content, allowing it to generate new poems that capture the essence of human emotion and experience. Additionally, AI can be used as a tool to inspire and assist human poets in their creative process, leading to collaborative and emotionally resonant works. The intersection of AI and poetry presents an opportunity for unique and thought-provoking artistic expression.”

I have to admit: I am curious about those intersections, too, which is why we play.
