I am hoping that I can do this every Saturday/Sunday morning, perhaps it will become a newsletter although I am not sure whether that is just more added noise than the lord allows. Just thought that in the multimodal, #digiwrimo spirit I would cast my net of interests just as widely.
Music I’m Listening To — Nape of the neck, hair-raising harmonies of Kodaline’s “All I Want”. This live YouTube version is so fine especially when they do the madrigal thing–singers facing each other so as to better hear each other’s voices. In my part of Kentucky this is known as ‘shapenote’ singing. Would love an a capella version of this. Best line: “Our lives were made from movie screens.”
And in honor of Participatory Culture Klatch (our digiwrimo book share) I dedicate Robert Earl Keen’s “The Road Goes on Forever”. The #DiGiWriMo roads goes on…and the crowd goes wild.
Article I’m Jonesin’ On — Kevin Hodgson suggested the first of a multipart article by Henry Jenkins on his website, Confessions of an Aca-Fan. This is link that will allow you to use the annotation tool Hypothes.is to carry the conversation onto the page. Sarah Honeychurch has already joined in with me. You come, too, by getting an account at Hypothes.is here.
Website I Am Also Jonesin’ On — Brainpickings. Their four-part series on James Baldwin and Margaret Meade is the gift that keeps on keepin’ on. I used a quote from Kafka from one of these posts to share with my wife this week, “You are the axe for the frozen sea inside me. Happy birthday.”
Book I’m Living With — I’m reading Participatory Culture in a Networked Era: A Conversation on Youth, Learning, Commerce, and Politics by Henry Jenkins, Mizuko Ito, and danah boyd. Here’s my Goodreads link: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/27820753-participatory-culture-in-a-networked-era.
Quote — “Knowledge is made by people, not found.”–David Bleich
What I’m watching/hearing — Freak me out funny and disturbing on so many levels, PSY is at it again. DADDY! Click it. We both know you wanna.
Podcast fav? This Is Hell’s episode “Neoliberal by degrees: The repackaging of an American college education”. The podcast “This Is Hell” is the best filtered talk about stuff you never hear anywhere else. Host Chuck Mertz has been my news guy for….forever. The recent revamp of their website has made it more accessible and useful than ever. This particular episode is about how the university has sold its soul or as writer and interview subject, William Deresiewicz, says,
All of the pathologies I see among college students at selective colleges, I see among our adult leadership class – they’re very ambitious, but they’re also very timid. They’re risk averse. They don’t seem to really care about other people. It’s all about their own benefit.
What I’m buying — I just bought a Windows phone. Yeah, crazy as a coot I am. Don’t be a hateh, be a congratulateh. I got a great deal not for a phone (although I can just pop my T-Mobile sim card right out and I have instant backup phone), but for an mp3 player. I have been using my Galaxy S5 for a year now as my phone and mp3 player. I really worry about wearing out the headphone jack. I know I could get bluetooth headphones, but that’s just another battery to have to manage.
I found an Acer Liquid M220, unlocked, for $19 at the Microsoft Store. It appears to be sold out right now, but if there was one there will be more. This phone has 8g of memory and an expandable 32g more if you buy an SD card. I listen to lots of podcasts and books on my commute so this will make a nice mp3 player for about thirty bucks total.
