The Hedgerow’s Song

I am a hedgerow,
illegible to those who live within.
They have never asked,“Who are you?”
They respect
my “urge and urge and urge”,
the generative urge of my world.
I suffice the birds and the worms
and the grapevine
and the bramble
and the rose.
To them
I am
the whole
that I am.
I am not legible.
I am no monoculture.
I sing to them,
“Keep wilding and re-wilding
the world.”

Here’s a summary taken from Google NotebookLM.

The Hedgerow’s Song

The poem “The Hedgerow” uses the imagery of a hedgerow to represent a complex and diverse natural ecosystem. The speaker, personified as the hedgerow, emphasizes its self-sufficiency and generative power, providing for various creatures. The poem ultimately advocates for embracing wildness and biodiversity. The hedgerow’s illegibility symbolizes its resistance to simplistic categorization and the importance of respecting natural complexity.

The gist of a poem never does it justice, but the podcast Notebook LM creates seems humane if not exactly human.  It is fun to ask in particular whether the poem seems too obscure.  That’s a different kind of Turing Test. I passed.  The more a post is like a hedgerow, the more the reader is respected and challenged.   It begs to be lingered over like a good stout, Hedgerow Stout.
