I Apologize for Generating Noise Today

I was on Paul Allison’s TTT last week with Jeremy Dean and Joe Dillon to have a little chinwag about Hypothes.is and its possibilities.

Today the usual suspects turned up at #HypEI (Remi Holden in Colorado with their Education Initiative) and I joined as best I could on the margins. No, really. I showed up to be part of an annotation flash mob. This means you get together with other folks and use Hypothes.is to make notes in the margins of some interesting writings.

So I stuck around the computer tweeting and hypothesi.zing for the heart of my day.  Here was my raw response.

One day of my life

I am pretty sure that I did little but generate noise and a general layer of confusion to the mix. I need to exercise better judgment.  I tend to give away my time.  Not sure how smart a strategy that is at this point in my life.  And the truth is that nobody asked me to do it. There was an open invitation to participate, but what did that mean? In my case, participating at arms length, it is hard to be present.  I tried, but most of these one-day conferences are not meant for anyone but local folk.  If you can participate in the margins you should count yourself lucky.  And I do.

Thanks to all who welcomed me and allowed me to share. Discouraging? A bit.  I make a big deal about trying to generate signal instead of noise. Epic fail today.

In the heart of your day
    giving, giving, giving
    maybe the ‘epic fail’
    is a building block
    for pearls
    or precious gravel.

Epic fail, well-considered, is to be wound up so as to spring forward even higher. It doesn’t feel that way at first when you are wiping blood from the corner of your mouth on the floor, but it does when you get back up for another round. I will fail. I will try again. Amen.
