I was brought to this term by an interview in, of all places, the Economist. Adam Curtis, the subject of the interview, did not invent the term. That honor belongs to Russian historian, Alexei Yurchak, but Curtis has defined it via visual media better that anyone.
Curtis devoted over two hours to the idea in his documentary, HyperNormalization included below.
This might be the kind of viewing activity that is best done together, a public rifftracking at the very least. You wanna? If so let me know and we can share responses.

Can you put it in Vialogues for group viewing and discussion?

I viewed the entire video on Saturday. It showed a dark view of the future with few paths to something different. Then today I saw your reference to the article on The Economist.
Both took a lot of time to read, but both were worth the time. The interview offered more hope, but not any simple solution.
I added links to bot to a list I’ve been building. It’s one of the links on this map. http://cmapspublic.ihmc.us/rid=1QSFF3Q0P-1MLPKNF-32G/Civil%20Liberties%20Resources.cmap

I agree with Daniel, that article was only a little hopeful with not much help in what to do. I did write a response though, http://whatelse.edublogs.org/2019/01/06/open-the-future/
Thanks for pointing us to that which may spur our imaginations so we don’t continue down a negative path.

Curtis argues that it is not the place for journalists to tell the new story. He says that used to be the job of the political leader. The journalists job is to outline the issue and raise awareness. His point is that the politicians have failed utterly in that work. Maybe what he suggests is that it is now the age of the citizen-politician. I did not expect to be thrown into that fray, nor, I suspect, did you. Each of us needs to figure out which story feels right, which story is our North Star, which story is compass point we need to follow—then we need to start walking toward where the compass points, making that road by walking it.
