Nudging Myself Toward the Brave New Online World

Da meme: get off my lawn

The embed below is from an infographic and post, “Seven Facts about the State of Online University Courses in 2019”. Normally, I think ‘clickbait’, but it had come through the filters of my RSS feed and it seemed worth a bit of attention.

It was worthy enough to send to my department head and to share here with you. Our department is hemorrhaging majors. Nothing new here as enrollments sink everywhere, but in the middle of this post is an amazing observation:

Since 2012, enrollments in distance learning courses has continued to increase despite a drop of over 1 million overall student enrollments in the higher education sector in the US in that same period.

I think this means a new career for many of us where we get off our perches and stop yelling at all the millenials and younger who live in online affinity networks. They expect everything to look like those networks as well. I am beginning to think that you cannot push that river.

The embed below is for those who might want to comment. Or maybe you can get off your porch and comment from your mobile device like so many of our students do. (Just an observation: I used the Chrome browser on my iPhone to comment on the infographic. Nope. Didn’t work. When I switched to Safari, no problems. I am going to use my mobile browser to make all my comments and replies to this piece just to get out of my comfort zone. You can, too. It is worth de-habitualizing just to be able to expose your own blind spots and biases. It’s called empathy. Try it, you’ll like it.
