In a Falling Tide, Get Yer Line in the Water

I have joined what the National Writing Project’s Writing Studio calls a “deeper dive”.  It is a writing workshop and our first task is to introduce ourselves.  I have mixed feelings about the efficacy of introductions. In a Zoom meeting, I think they should be done a little before the official session begins otherwise the meeting time gets compromised. Or maybe they should be done at the end of the meeting.  On the other hand, I love playing introduction games and icebreakers  in a F2F situation.  Mixed feelings, like I said.

In introducing myself to my students in university composition classes, I usually show a video version of David Foster Wallace’s “This Is Water”.  I get to demo some important ideas and I get to show off my mad discussion facilitation skills.  I am going to introduce myself to my workshop community with a TikTok video.  I am inspired by the content of this video especially since I have retired as a full-time teacher.  The ‘thesis’ of the video is inspiring.  I love the narrative in the form of an interview.  I love text on top of image.  My choice of video as introduction should say more about me than my about.me says.

Here is the introduction video:

Falling Tide? Line in the Water!

Based on what I’ve seen from you over the past 8 years you have your “line in the water” every day, always experimenting with new forms of learning and communications.

What a long strange truckin’ trip it has been.

That’s a great video — get your line in the water — try new things — to be alive for new thing “coming across the transom” — and maybe listen to others who know more than we know, too — “hey, kid” —

Hilarious that they use the metaphor of a transom–obsolete tech…or is it?
