The Last Rose of Summer

The Last Rose of Summer

Purple asters
and
purple obedient
duke it out
in our garden
for the title:
the last rose of summer.
I got those asters
fifteen years ago
from an office assistant
in the English Department
my first semester of teaching at university.
It is leggy
and a bit ungainly,
but it always
makes.
The obedient was one we bought
last year
from a crazy plant lady
on a wild, spring galavant
into the hills of
the Dripping Springs Escarpment.
It has spread by seed
from a few spindly plants
in a too shady
piece of ground
under the gingko
in our front yard.
They are evenly matched.
This could go on for years.
Stay tuned.
