Defund the Hierarchy!

Many teachers are perfectly aware that their journey with learners has been a contrarian path. Why? Because the status quo must be opposed. It is an ethical imperative to protect our students from the current system as much as possible. By opposing we protect. I am always looking for alternatives to what we have, trails blazed in another direction, a better way. I have known about Elinor Ostrom’s work with “common pool resources” for quite awhile. Eventually we need to apply mutual aid and alternative ways to organize business and social life.

I recently flew to Lisbon to participate in a two-day talk and workshop led by Pablo Aretxabala and Jabi Salcedo from K2K Emocionando. K2K has successfully transformed 70 organisations (many of them industrial companies) in the Basque Country from traditional hierarchies to flourishing, self-managing organisations.
