I say “of sorts” because the only worms working their way through the vellum are digital ones, intentional ones.

What I mean is this: take one text then take another text and read them at the same time. The filter of going back and forth or up and down in the text is intended to shake loose new associations and innovations. If nothing else this process might just slow us down enough to truly appreciate what the authors are saying to us and through us to each other. I am the medium, my hands holding the readers’ and the writers’ hands. Seance!

Here are the two texts taken randomly from the new books sections of two libraries:

I responded to each book as I read them. Of course, I always skim a book first so my process was to take sticky notes as I read which I then placed on graph paper. Why graph paper? The grids just make me happy, I guess.

Then I arranged them and transferred these notes onto the paper. This was the result:

I took the image and improvised a short screencast/feldgang through it.

There are many adjacencies to this kind of improvisational work: poetry, tweets, blog posts, learning of all kinds, more empathic reading and writing, music, art, calligraphy, comix, or action in the world. Lots of ‘verbing’ as you make them ‘nouns’.

Here are some of those adjacencies:

Tables of Contents can serve as sources for “daily creates”–writing prompts, dialogue prompts, conversations online. See image below.

Questions: why have my wife and I never named our farm? (This was evoked by the cool place names in the maps in the two books.)

Observation: Every book is a graveyard. Dead tree + inert ideas…unless the reader activates them.

Observation: I might look for hope in a graveyard, but I will not be coroner to an extinction event.

I know for certain that these ideas would never have occurred to me had I not mashed them together onto a single page. I am a medium to this seance. It is heady work (pun intended) yet it is amazing how little ground I have covered in this feldgang. So very rich a field, so many rocks to turn over, so many rhizomes to connect and quantum bits to transfer. Have at it, hoss. Life is short. Go walking with a child who has questions. Turn inertia into action. Break every law of thermodynamics. Defy gravity.

I have been looking at a palimpsest of sorts lately.
