Is This Way a Map or Is It a Story?<\/p>\n

Knowing and learning,
\nevery morning it fills my sails.
\nThese waters are full of shouts and sights.
\nI note, I hear,
\nNot a path or a way.
\nI hear my keel gliding
\ndrawn on by magnetic poles and stars.
\nAnd I ask, “What will the future bring?”
\nPart of the answer–
\na safe harbor–
\nand another part of the answer
\nwants to be
\njust shell-seeking on any beach.
\nWe take what we are given,
\na whole way, a whale road
\nwhere the sea is wild and cold,
\nclouds and icebergs.
\nEither answer requires our attention,
\nalert to the unsafe,
\nawake to the confounding of all our straight lines,
\nwhere failing to heed this aimless reality
\ncan mean oblivion.
\nSome days, most days I hope,
\nwe sail the course that we have set,
\nour own desire paths and not the wake of fate.
\nOther days our course might be reset
\nby circumstance.
\nRolling with the tide,
\nkeeping on by tacking back,
\nthose may be the only ways ahead.
\nThis begs another question,
\n“Is this way a map
\nor is it a story?”
\nThey are very different things.<\/p>\n
