They say it’s hard not to lose your head
When all around you are losing theirs
They say it’s hard not to lose heart
But you’ve known if from the start
Things fall apart
Why oh why did America die?
Did they fill her full of un-American lies?
Did they use their hollow hearts to guide her mind?
Why oh why did America die?
Did they find a cancer propping up her spine?
Did she see herself through someone else’s eyes?
Why oh why did America die?
Why oh why did America die?
We set to sail upon a broken ship
On a broken sea that wouldn’t carry it
To avoid the question and the answer to it
We set to sail upon a broken ship
They say it’s hard not to lose your head
When all around you are losing theirs
They say it’s hard not to lose heart
But you’ve known if from the start
Things fall apart
There’s no direction home from here
Let the rising tide swallow all your fear
There’s no direction home from here
We can’t steer by the stars for all the atmosphere
There’s no direction home from here
But you’ve known it from the start
Things fall apart

I think it’s too early to be reflecting on “why did America die?” but this may be prophetic in the future.
In one of my blog articles I included a graphic that I label “here to there”. In many of my articles I’m inviting others to create their own maps and visualizations, showing the steps they think need to be taken to solve a problem, or to get from “here to there”. http://tutormentor.blogspot.com/2015/12/what-do-we-need-to-be-thinking-about.html
I’d love to see students and adults from many places creating and sharing their blueprints for how to prevent the “why did America die?” lyrics from becoming headlines of future history books.
