A Side Trip: the Power of App Smashing (Canva + Embedly + Blog)

My web co-maker @dogtrax asked me how I created the interactive image from my post yesterday. Here is a quick summing up.

1.Select template on Canva. Remember that educators get a free Pro account at Canva. Yeah, I know. What a deal, right?
2. There are a zillion templates in Canva so I focused on picking one that felt good and had an interesting font.
3. I manually cleared the template of any extraneous visual elements (text boxes, images, formatting).
4. I uploaded the image and dragged it into the template.
5. I added elements:
a. “spray paint number” gifs for noting the order of events on the image.
b. “text boxes”
6. I typed in explanatory textboxes using the “glow” font. Why? Canva brims with fonts. I like the glow font. Fairly readable.
7. To make the text interactive (hyperlinks in this case) I highlighted the text and then clicked on the link icon in the upper right hand corner of Canva. Paste the link into the indicated spot.
8. When you’re done with your interactive links it is time to share.
a. Click the share button. It is above the link icon.
b. In the dropdown you will be able to change the share so that anyone can view, comment upon, or edit your image.
c. After step 8(b), you will click on the “More” link at the bottom of the dropdown.
d. Under the share options, you will see an icon (there are lots) labelled “Website”. Click it.
9. Choose your webstyle: presentation, scrolling, or classic navigation and click on “open website” button. Copy the url that is created.
10. Here is the part of the task that takes you away from Canva. You will need to go to Embedly to create an embed code to share the image in your blog, WordPress for my case.
11. Paste the url you have just copied in step 9 into the Embedly text box. It will create an embed code.
12. Copy the embed code and then paste it into your blog.
13. Bob’s your mother’s brother.

The trick to writing these kinds of sequential instructions is not to miss the most obvious steps. If I am Captain Obvious, please forgive me. If I am Captain “You Missed a Step”, let me know and I will do a quick screencast.

UPDATE: I have added a survey to my post to ask about the quality of my directions. Here it is:
