I was asked in a tweet to share how I use Vialogues online so I presented two use cases. I thought maybe someone else might be interested.
Use Case #1: I took the David Foster Wallace adapted commencement speech “This Is Water” and showed it in class. We discussed. Then I showed them the Vialogues version and asked them to comment on it for the next class. At class the next day we discussed the Vialogues discussion and I showed them how they might use digital tools to riff off the discussion: memes, vines, instagrams, FB posts, interviews on youtube, poems, songs, black out poetry, frequency analysis, digital or analog or blended. Next class was show and tell on what they did.
Use Case #2: This was in my online lit class where I offer students the opportunity to do alternate responses to discussions and activities with YouTube. She sent me a YouTube and I put it into a Vialogue where I gave here a one-to-one response on what she said. I have always felt that Vialogues is perfect as a diagnostic tool for skills type courses. Nurses could use it for critiques of IV’s, speech pathologists could record their client meetings with permission, business students could draft elevator pitches and get feedback.
Nothing quite like the ease of use for Vialogues– share annotations with professional colleagues, do private close readings of videos for better understanding, make screencasts to share problems and questions. It is embeddable in blogs, you can make it private, you can embed questions, and it is easy to copy and paste conversations. I hope to God they never do away with it.
Let me know if you want to share a Vialogue for fun and experience. Happy to set one up or you can do so and I will visit yours. It is so free. Bless EdLab and Columbia University for creating and hosting it.
