Considering Gratitude as a Soapbox Derby

Reverie: A Thank You Note

Last night I had

the strangest dream.

I was speeding downhill

toward Death,

but the velocity of my gratitude

shoots by next to me

in some goofy

soapbox derby racer.

I see my crazy

grinning self there

in utter wonder

at this chain of events.

“How the hell…”

I see him say without sound,

Face-to-face

with the grace

of gratitude,

Neck-and-neck,

cheating Death.

I mouth back to him

“Thanks.”

As we both wobble

toward

our rendezvous

with oblivion.

    Some days:
    the wheels fall off
    the glue won’t hold
    the wheel won’t steer
    the crash seems
    more imminent then ever

May those days still bring forth
    acts of faith and friendship
and maybe a little something more,

something to hold us together as we
    careen down this hill
    in a derby designed
to be finished, if not won
