Connected Papers In the Composition Classroom

As so often happens with my search for tech, I can’t remember where I came across this particular tool. Apologies.

It’s called “Connected Papers” and what it does is to show us graphically how academic research is connected.

This is a classic AI approach–big database, big algorithm.  Some kind of algorithm, anyways.

I am working on a research project alongside my advanced composition classes. My question is this: will AI tools automate my job as a composition instructor?

In my initial research, I found that these keywords were very productive on Google Scholar: “AIEd”. There, I found on especially relevant academic paper, “Implementing Automated Writing Evaluation in Different Instructional Contexts: A Mixed-Methods Study”.It is a simple matter of cutting  and pasting that paper title into the Connected Papers search engine.  I demonstrate this in the screencast below.

You can see in my short screencast that I have joined Connected Papers with Zotero in order to save my research.  Zotero is a database with lots of potential for wrangling big information.  Used in combination with Connected Papers you have a superior filter engine for gathering, making sense of, and sharing research information to your personal learning networks.  I will be sharing this with my students in the fond hope that they have time to take in and use these new tech tools.  What I tell them is that anyone has 15 minutes every day to try out or watch someone online as they demo a new tool.  I have always found it to be well worth the effort.
