I have joined with Charlene Doland on her EPIC Learners site to share a long, slow discussion of Brene Brown’s Dare to Lead. We are doing an initial foray into annotating what Brown calls a “Belonging Statement“. You can belong, too. As usual with these annotation groups/mobs there is a grand outpouring of energy and focus onto a single text, but the outpouring usually ends up trapped in the annotation text boxes.
I suggest we sum up some takeaways from our annotations and perhaps some quick reflection as way to avoid the typical sense of waste that we often feel after the annotation group is “done”. I do love Hypothes.is and I think what we have done in EPIC is useful because it gathers us together to at least reflect in the margins about Brown’s work. But…if that is all we do then I think we waste much of the energy we have expended in responding. That is a lot of power gone untapped.
Here is a link to the previously untapped but now tapped: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1v8lwUcnzVofHiZQDT5imyTyCT_y9JOAj0bzbF1h7CF4/edit?usp=sharing
You can add to these. Correct them. Comment further if you wish. Or use them in any way. The idea is to not waste the energy. If this is not something you feel you signed up for, then by all means—-RUN!!!
Here is an embedded version of the google doc if you prefer to preview it without leaving this blog post. Click inside the box and scroll down. It is in a funky columnar format that I don’t know how to broaden, but it is readable.
For those who are interested in how I gathered the annotations, here’s my workflow which is, as usual, a combination of analog and digital:
First, we annotated the website using a group link in Hypothes.is. Some great stuff, but basically inert blobs in the self-contained ‘petri dishes’.
Second, I read through each note in the Hypothes.is margins and tried to figure out the gist of it through a summing up or a paraphrase. I wrote these down in my writer’s notebook.
Third, I created a new Google Doc and then read my handwritten into that blank document using the Voice Typing function in the “Tools” dropdown. Love that tool especially as a change of pace. I often will do a further revision or additions on the fly. Pretty fly.
Fourth, I shared the document as a link and as an embed on this blog.
Now we have a broader and stronger platform to add, multiply, divide, and subtract as we need. And we do need to honor and amplify and reflect upon our own work at least some bit more. Or so I suggest. YMMV.
