Feral Squash

Feral was once domesticated and is now become wild. There is an order of operations here. Suffice to say, as Dylan Thomas did, it is “the force the through the green fuse drives the flower.”  ‘Tis.

Feral Squash

I want to be
a wild
and voluntary winter squash.
Maybe a butternut
or a hubbard
perched atop
a compost pile,
a chthulu,
sucking it all down,
slugging toe-to-toe
in the heavyweight class
Against squash beetles and old man winter.
Yeah,
I know that’s futile,
but I don’t care.
I will still win.
My fruit makes seed
Forever and ever,
Amen.

Maybe the squash represents forces working to create a more fair, just and equal world. While those in power have tried to keep the plant “in its place” it keeps spreading, taking root in many places.
