I paraphrased into a poem the opening paragraph of Rebecca Solnit’s Hope in the Dark . I did this as a close read and because I identify with the sentiments of both Virginia Woolf and Solnit.

Far Stranger Now and Later
‘The future is dark, which is on the whole,
the best thing the future can be.”–Virginia Woolf
Convulsing and dying?
The future? Dark?
So sayeth Virginia Wolff,
inspired by WWI.
Dark but not menacing.
Dark as in untraveled, undetermined.
Are we sure? Do we know?
Is it a dead end instead?
A comfortable end of days cul-de-sac?
Or is it
as Rebecca Solnit feels
a far stranger thing
than the apocalypse?
Yes.
Far stranger, more complex, and certain.
We can be damned sure
of this dark uncertainty.

uncertainty is like the shifting ground beneath us, always …

I’ve often though of life as a journey through many rooms. Each has a door that opens into darkness of the unknown. Only after we enter and stay awhile does it begin to light up with knowledge and experience. An the fear of that room lessens.
Yet, the fear of the next door is always present.
