Practicing Automatic Summary with SMMRY-XT: TL;DR–Don’t Waste My Precious Life

I found a new Chrome/Firefox extension in the website Product Hunt this morning.  It purports to take a fluff-filled blog post and turn it into a lean mean signifying machine.  This text below is the result for this article.

In this article, we’ll recommend two of the best methods for downloading music and other assets from YouTube.

Downloading Via YouTube-DLG. A lot of programs and websites have come and gone with the intention of letting users download files from YouTube.

Luckily, we have an even safer method when it comes to downloading music and videos from YouTube, which is guaranteed not to infringe on any laws or terms.

(keywords: download, YouTube, video, copyright, service, any, work, access, app, fair)

Not particularly helpful, is it?  Let me  change some of the parameters.  Here’s the result for that change: reducing keyword numbers, adding sentences.

Downloading Via YouTube-DLG. A lot of programs and websites have come and gone with the intention of letting users download files from YouTube.

The user simply enters one or more URL addresses that they wish to download from, selects their choice from a range of video and audio formats, and lets DLG do its work.

Access, reproduce, download, distribute, transmit, broadcast, display, sell, license, alter, modify or otherwise use any part of the Service or any Content except: as expressly authorized by the Service; or with prior written permission from YouTube and, if applicable, the respective rights holders;.

Once the feature is enabled, you can find a download icon under videos next to where you’d usually find sharing and commenting features.

Downloading directly via the YouTube app is the most worry-free method to save the content on your device.

Perhaps worse. It is clear that the summary ‘algorithm’ does not ‘get’ how it is supposed to look for the two best methods.  The extension doesn’t understand its purpose or audience nor does it have any empathy for us.  It is anti-humane. It wastes our time. It is worse than useless.  I am not sure there is any way to make this work.

Maybe Quillbot works better as a summarizer:

Plus, we’ll go over the legality of saving clips offline, and how they may affect the company’s terms of service.
A trickier facet of copyright law is something known as fair use.
YouTube also sees third-party downloaders like DLG as a violation of their user agreement, as outlined in the terms of service:The following restrictions apply to your use of the Service.

In recent years, the company has implemented a feature that allows users to save content directly from the website or mobile app.

Yeah, not so good, eh?  This is an argument for formally learning how to sum up text and image.  That skill was the first I taught my composition students in university. My second skill was to learn how to store it somewhere digitally or in analog.  My third skill was to make sense of the summary in a larger context. In other words what are you going to do with summary?  Is it part of a larger product like a research summary or is it part of a critique or analysis.

Neither of these summary tools help. Nope.

If you don’t like this conclusion, just watch this instead and, as the narrator says, “live your stupid life.”
